What is protective window film? Protective Films are composed of optical quality clear polyester as the basic material, originally developed in the 1930’s. The product has evolved technologically to be a extraordinarily versatile and effective for multiple purposes. Films come as single ply or multiple layers known as laminates. An important part of what makes advanced window film technology work so well is the new generation of powerful adhesives that so effectively bond the film to glass. |

What are window films used for? Films are used for several basic purposes or combinations of purposes; safety and security objectives; energy savings resulting from the ability of the film to reflect and absorb the sun’s energy; enhancing comfort by reducing glare and uncomfortable “hot spots” in areas with direct exposure to sunlight; and finally architectural design preferences. How does protective window film keep us safe? Protective window films designed for safety and security come in variations of single ply or thicker multi-ply layers to satisfy higher levels of risk. Films are generally applied to the interior surface of windows and doors and are designed to sustain an impact that would be expected to break or shatter the glass and to retain the broken or shattered glass intact in its frame. The chance of broken or shattered glass becoming lethal airborne shards is greatly reduced. How does window film strengthen security? Films designed for security purposes are generally tough multi-ply films that are applied to the interior surface to make the glass difficult to break and more difficult to penetrate, even after the glass has actually broken. The combination of difficulty to break and penetrate the glass is a powerful deterrent. The chances of opportunistic smash and grab burglaries or a forced entry is greatly reduced. One important reason security film is so successful is the element of surprise. The intruder is expecting to proceed right through any glass obstacles and is unlikely prepared with necessary tools, the need for more time and the risk of being seen and heard. These are the elements of deterrence most likely to terminate any attempted forced entry. Do I need security film if I already have a state of the art alarms system? Yes! If you are concerned enough about security to have an alarm system, filming your glass is a vital component of any integrated security system. An alarm system is designed to serve the purpose of deterrence and give notice to any potential intruder that an alarm will sound and there will be very little time before law enforcement arrives on the scene. The intruder has two basic choices; move on to an easier target where there may not be an alarm system; or break in despite the posting of an alarm system, and be prepared to quickly accomplish the crime and escape before law enforcement .arrives. Security film will deprive any intruder of the ability to quickly break-in with the expectation of an easy escape. The element of surprise will play an important role as the intruder is unlikely to be prepared to penetrate the security filmed glass in the short amount of time necessary to avoid detection. Critical to security monitoring companies is the all important average, or even guaranteed, response time to be on the scene. Response time is meaningful when there is a better chance of apprehending the criminal; rather than investigating the crime scene after an intruder has escaped with your valuables (insurance companies like this feature). Security film will give you the extra time…take that time away from an intruder …give your security monitoring company or law enforcement the precious time needed to interrupt the crime and apprehend the criminals. Most important, alarm or no alarm, Security film will give you and your family the advantage. If you and your family are home, maybe at night fast asleep, would you rather be confronted by an intruder at the foot of your bed simultaneously with your state of the art alarm sounding or would you rather hear a frustrated intruder outside your home making a racket attempting to break through your hardened security filmed glass? What impact will security film have in the event of a fire? Security films will ad an element of safety in the event of a fire. The film serves the purpose of holding the glass intact in its frame while resisting temperatures approaching 500 degrees Fahrenheit. When ordinary glass fails under fire conditions, the danger is caused by oxygen rushing in to feed the fire. Security and safety films are engineered to retain the glass intact within its frame under adverse conditions and reduce the chances of a dangerous rush of oxygen to expand the fire. How do I choose the right window film? The best way to
make an informed decision is to speak with a safety film expert to review
your individual goals and objectives. Choose a film engineered and designed
for the purpose that’s right for you. No! However, security film will make any security / alarm system more effective. Security film and an audible alarm system are not only compatible; they are a very effective combination. The alarm is of course a deterrent and an audible warning of breaking and entry in progress, however, the alarm does not slow the intruder; in fact, with the alarm sounding the intruder will be in a big hurry. Security film will either stop an intruder in his tracks or seriously slow him down. This is a vital contribution to your safety and security; give the time to you and your family, not an intruder. I already have tempered glass, isn’t this safety glass? Yes and No. No, even small nuggets of glass can be very dangerous, especially if they become lethal airborne projectiles from high winds or other high impact causes. Can safety and security film be applied to tempered glass? Yes. Safety and security film is not only compatible with tempered glass; but is a very effective combination. Safety and security film is designed to not only strengthen the glass, but should the glass be broken, to help retain it intact in its frame. With security and safety film applied to tempered glass there is a significantly reduced risk of injury from dangerous flying glass debris. I already have factory produced laminated safety glass, will field applied security and safety film serve any purpose? Yes. Although factory produced laminated safety glass certainly provides a high level of protection it can be more effective with the addition of field applied safety and security film. The factory produced laminated glass has layers of lamination embedded in one or more layers of the glass itself. On severe impact from an object on the outside, the exposed interior surface is subject to small pieces of glass splintering and separating from the glass surface and being forcefully projected inward as a safety hazard. With the application of safety and security film to the factory produced laminated glass, it will be stronger and the safety hazard of flying splinters of glass on the otherwise exposed interior surface will be greatly reduced. Is safety and security film effective with factory produced insulated glass? Yes. Is safety and security film, architectural design or solar films compatible with low e or other factory treated or tinted windows and doors already installed? Most likely; depending on the purpose intended and the existing installed configuration and exposure of windows; field applied films can be effective for the purpose intended. It is important to consult a qualified professional. How much does safety and security film cost? Whatever your intended use, Glass Security’s films are cost effective and economical. The cost of field applied films is a fraction of the cost of new factory produced safety / security window and glass systems. Most important, depending on the job requirements, the field applied film can comply with the toughest building codes designed to make glass windows and doors “hurricane resistant”. Factory produced windows and doors that meet the “hurricane resistant” building codes, are much more expensive. Each job is different and must be evaluated based on actual field conditions and individual objectives. We welcome your call to arrange for a no obligation estimate. 212-972-8847 Glass Security, LLC
